Over the past years, the government has been putting effort to encourage a new kind of economy that utilizes technology and innovation by systematically driving the growth of entrepreneurs from incubation in educational institutions, pushing forward Tech Startup, and developing the capacity of SME entrepreneurs to compete with entrepreneurs from other countries.
Initiatives that people are keeping an eye on that receive continual support measures from the government are the stimulation to create Tech Startup, the capacity development of Tech Startup, and the uplifting of Tech Startup to become technology businesses that grow sustainably.
At present, the structure of emerging businesses has changed drastically especially in the SME entrepreneur group. In the past, the model of emerging SMEs usually relied on penetration into the gaps of businesses that were ignored by large entrepreneurs or not worth investing in. But now, SME entrepreneurs are tapping into new business model that integrates technology and ideas to create innovation and, thus, the innovation business or what is called ‘Tech Startup’ – another form of SME entrepreneurs.
In Thailand, Tech Startup is still in the initial stages. During the past mid-year, Tech Startup entrepreneurs formed an association named “Thailand Tech Startup Association (Tech Startup)” in order to support and seriously push forward the Tech Startup.
Propelling Tech Startup is the responsibility of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDE) as well as agencies under the Ministry such as Software Industry Promotion Agency or SIPA to publicize, push, and promote development of Tech Startup in Thailand.
Under the support to create Tech Startup, SIPA believes that the main issue of Tech Startup in Thailand is the lack of manpower for creativity as well as the lack of skill in developing new businesses based on digital innovation that can attract domestic and international investment. Therefore, SIPA has pushed forward the project to develop a digital workforce in order to create new entrepreneurs.
In the past months, SIPA launched “Project to Develop Digital Workforce to Create Digital Technology Business (Tech Startup)” by signing a Memorandum of Agreement with higher education institutions in order to cooperate in development of the digital capacity among youths as well as to found the SIPA Tech Startup Club, which will be a starting point of digital workforce incubation to develop skillful and capable personnel for a digital economy and to create a new generation of Tech Startup and digital ecosystem pushing forward the creation of new products and services through digital knowledge.
SIPA Tech Startup Club will be a significant project that connects and gathers IT students from over 40 higher education institutions to develop an atmosphere that drives students to apply their ideas on IT to create products and services that will eventually lead to establishing a Tech Startup.
SIPA Tech Startup Club is another project that plays an important role in developing new entrepreneurs that are equipped with IT knowledge and ready to progress into a Tech Startup, which will be a crucial foundation in developing the Digital Economy in accordance with the government guidelines.
